Father’s Day at Last

Category: Adventures in Parenting – Daddy Rimes – 7:57 pm

Today felt like my first real Father’s Day. I know that Ella is almost 2 and really I’ve gone through all of this before; first Mother’s Day, first Christmas, etc. This time around though is so much different. Now that she’s walking, talking (in her own gibberish sort of toddler way), and begging for me to play with her (which I love doing of course), it all seems so much more special.

When she gave me her card that she made at daycare, I gushed and gave her a huge hug and kiss and started her giggling and grinning. When I searched the house for my Father’s Day present, carefully following the clues Mommy Rimes had laid out for me, I carried her and we excitedly giggled and laughed when we found each of the three quite humorous bath-time photos of her (hair all spiked up from shampoo). And to reach the end of my search, to find a wonderfully framed photo of her from the beach last year made my heart melt.

I know that I’ve used just about every cliche I can for showing my affection, so I’ll just leave it at “I’m a very happy man today.” I felt very loved, and in return it made me want to love both my wife and my child even more. I hope that every father out there today had some small moment in which to share their love for the children or child.

diaper baby!

Category: Adventures in Parenting – Mommy Rimes – 2:12 pm

Is this normal?

Our almost 2 year old has decided that she shouldn’t wear diapers anymore.  Or any clothes for that matter, with the exception of socks.

And if she’s not wearing any clothes, neither should any of her dolls.  Her Cabbage Patch doll has been naked for nearly 3 days and refuses to wear pants. Baby R has even figured out how to use the diaper wipes and Butt Paste on said doll, but absolutely refuses to re-diaper her.

So anyway, between the naked doll butts and the real baby butts around here, it’s been quite the week. Now, if only I could have the patience to train her to use the big girl potty while her little naked tushy is hanging out, it might save me some extra cleaning (thank goodness for tile/hardwood floors!)

and no, there are no naked butt pictures to show you today.

mommy day!

Category: Adventures in Parenting – Mommy Rimes – 7:44 pm

I had a lovely mommy’s day today. It started with sleeping in while Little One played quietly in her crib. When she got a little loud at 6:30, we figured it was time to get up anyway (yes, that’s sleeping in). Daddy and Baby made me fluffy scrambled eggs and home made toast (molasses bread made in the bread machine the day before).
Then the traditional opening of cards and whatnot. Little One’s card was a beautiful pink construction paper number with her not-so-little tootsies inside. Daddy’s was a very sweet kitty (boynton) card, which Little One helped color. I also got to open a very cool yarn-tainer with ghirardellis inside. The perfect present, a container for my yarn (with a whole in top for the yarn to stay tangle free while knitting) and chocolate. Hooray for Mother’s Day!

The rest of the day went just as wonderfully. I was able to garden and use my new machete (another slightly mother’s day gift) to tackle the back garden with all the ivy in it. The Green Monster is behind our garage, so anyone needing practice, come on over.

Then it was dinner at gramma’s with great grandmother as well. Yummy yummy roast and potatoes and grilled shrimp. Plus, with all the grandmother type people running around, I even got to use my new yarn-tainer to work on another sock.

All in all, it was a nice Sunday with not too much mush, and the perfect amount of family and kisses.

PS. Happy Mother’s Day to my mommy as well. I’m sure she spend the day in horse heaven with her friends.

center of the universe

Category: Adventures in Parenting – Mommy Rimes – 2:02 pm

I realized the other day that this little person of mine has become the center of the universe for me.  Before her, I was the typical artist type person.  I would start working on a project before dinner, eat a sandwich when I was hungry, then go back to my art.  I could do this until fairly late in the evening.  Then, early the next morning (ok, not too early) I would get right back into it.  I could put out several projects a week if I was truly inspired.

But now, OOOOooooOOOoh no!  I’m lucky if I get one project done a MONTH.  And even then, most are left unfinished or are a sorry excuse for a true art project.  How could that be? you ask, Mommy Rimes, you are an art teacher, and you are always sewing up something interesting.  Well, let me tell you, I’ve been working on knitting a pair of socks since November.  Know how far I’ve gotten?  I’ve managed to get one sock ALMOST done, as of today.  I still have to knit the toe part.  Yup, 5 months to make ONE SOCK.  If I lived a hundred years ago, my family would have some pretty cold toes.

But, what about your quilts? you ask, that’s what you really dig.  I have two completely unfinished quilts sitting next to my sewing machine right now, and one that is all bagged up still from moving over the summer.  I finally had to give in and do a simple charm square quilt just to get the creativity out of my system.  Have I bound it yet? Nope, it’s still sitting there.

Ahh, but what I lack in art time, I make up for in toddler time.  She is the bright and shining sun in my day, and her daddy and I just rotate around her.  And one day, she will turn into a teenager and disappear from the heavens to a new solar system with new planets/friends, so I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.  When that day happens, you better watch out art world.  Because that’s the day I will get back into this art business.

echo?

Category: Adventures in Parenting – Mommy Rimes – 8:43 pm

echoOOoo!

Mommy and Daddy will definitely have to watch what they say from here on out.  We have a Baby Repeater on our hands.  A couple of weeks ago, it was body parts; “This is your elbow.” “Ehbow!”  But now, it’s just about anything that we end our sentences with, such as,

“how was your day?”

“day!”

“drink your milk.”

“mihk”

(daddy’s favorite) “you’ve got boogers!”

“bOOgahs!”

Oh yes, I can see the day when our little darling tells some adult at church or her babysitter what Mommy and Daddy were discussing the night before.  From how our day went at school, to the names of all the naughty children we talk about (in a positive, how would you handle this situation, way, of course), to to the exact way Mommy pronunciates “you dummy” any time someone can’t figure out how to hang up their phone and drive.

So, if you are ever within earshot of our little echo, please remember to watch what you say and only say those things you want repeated in polite company.

almost spring

Category: Adventures in Parenting, Uncategorized – Mommy Rimes – 5:39 pm

It’s been getting closer and closer to spring, and we’ve been watching the crocuses and tulips sprouting.  During a warm spell last week (it was 73!) Baby and Mommy took a long walk to look at all the little green things sticking up out of the ground.  There are cute little patches around our backyard of spring-y joys.  After so much snow and cold the last little bit of winter, we are truly enjoying the sunshine and green that has at last come back to Michigan.

Meanwhile, in other news, our little linguist has a few new words to add to her vocabulary.  Among them, are “oap,” “baaa,” and “ehhbow.”  Roughly translated, in order, these are soap, bath, and elbow.  It’s so amazing what she can communicate with so few words.  But she does pretty well with the sign language and body movements as well.

Time to Eat!

Category: Adventures in Parenting, Uncategorized – Mommy Rimes – 11:07 am

Lately, we’ve been really pushing the words with Baby Rimes. When she says, “Eeeaa,” we say, “would you like something to eat?”  When she says, “teee,” we say, “would you like to brush your teeth?”  And, when she says, “cooee,” we respond, “are you putting on your coat?”

But, the other morning, as Daddy and I were sitting in our bedroom chatting while Baby was on the floor playing, she simply astounded us.  She looked up at Daddy, said, “Eeaa.”  He said, “Are you hungry?”  She got up, turned around to the door, and said, as clear as could be, “Time to eat!” and marched off to the kitchen.

We stood there looking after her, and then at each other, both asking, was that what we think she said?  Yup, there she was, standing in the kitchen at the refrigerator, ready for breakfast.

It’s amazing what happens when you aren’t looking.

App-ple

Category: Adventures in Parenting – Mommy Rimes – 12:51 pm

It’s our newest word.  I’m so astounded how, quite all of a sudden, we have a linguist on our hands.  She’s even putting together little phrases and requests.

This morning, it was apple.  Well, more app-ple with a little pause in the middle.  So, I handed her the big red apple on the counter.  She looked so pleased with herself and took a big bite out of it.

Baby Rimes can almost make the shopping list all on her own now.

We’d have a lot of Nannas, App-ples, jue, maah, and cheeee.

boo!

Category: Adventures in Parenting, PARTY! – Mommy Rimes – 12:54 pm

Let me start by saying that this story would be much better with pictures. That being said, you can send all hate mail to Daddy Rimes.

All Hallow’s Eve was mostly uneventful for our little Yoda (Can’t you just picture her in her cute little homemade knit Yoda hat?) While she didn’t go door to door grabbing candy, she did help Mommy and Daddy hand it out to other little witches and gobblins (Here’s where another absolutely adorable picture should be). She was so excited about handing out candy, that she would hold one in her hand, stretched out, peeking out of the doorway, practically using the force to will another little person into existance so she could drop said piece of candy into their bag. She did a marvelous job, only pausing in her duties when a very large child in a mask came to the door. Then she stood with the strangest look trying to figure out exactly what this strange creature was doing at her door trying to get her candy. (Wouldn’t another picture just be wonderful?) She didn’t cry once, except when the candy ran out.

What a wonderful child we have.

103

Category: Adventures in Parenting, Sick Days – Mommy Rimes – 11:20 am

Is that the number of toys Baby had out today? No.  Could it be the number of times she took her books off the shelf? Nope.  The number of minutes she napped?

No, that was the read out on the thermometer on Friday. So after I picked her up from daycare, and gave her some serious lovin’ and some tylenol, we cuddled up for a late afternoon nap.  She was pretty cranky all night, even waking us up around midnight to tell us how grumpy she was.

When we awoke after 7 (a miracle), panicked over why she got up so late, and took another temp reading, she was back to her very normal 98.6 degree self.  What could it be? we thought.  After a couple of hours of pondering, we discovered the solution to why our baby was so warm the night before. One of her wee little molars finally made its appearance.

Our little baby is growing up and getting her big girl teeth.  At least there aren’t 103 of these left.
