weeds

The Rimes family took advantage of the glorious weekend weather to do some gardening. Even Baby Rimes helped. Mommy showed her what to pull up and off she went. Tearing out everything that had a green leaf on it (so much for those day lilies). Plus we pulled out even MORE ivy from around the house. Baby Rimes is a little bummed about that, because she likes to tromp through the piles of ivy leaves and jump off the raised bed where the ivy has taken over. Her play area is slowly dwindling.

Baby Rimes also helped Mommy and Daddy with the big garden. Our neighbors have given us the go ahead to use a little of their space for a veggie garden. It’s the only 5 feet of space that gets sun besides the back porch. So, we’ll be planting a little fruit and veggie garden and teaching Little One how to pick tomatoes - I’m sure she’ll be an expert in no time. So far, the peppers I planted indoors have come up and are surviving. The tomatoes and chives didn’t really make it, nor did the rosemary. But the Marjoram might just make a comeback. Then I get to start the cucumbers and watermelon this month!

In other news, Mommy has signed on to Sockapalooza 4

Now, if I can just get that first pair of socks done…

verbose part 2

Category: Uncategorized – Mommy Rimes – 7:05 pm

mini sentences are now spewing from our child’s lips.
ALL. DAY. LONG.

“eat nanna”
“bye bye dec-an”
“moe moohk” (more milk)
“get down wahhk”
“”nie nie mommy wuv yuu”

I know, you’re all thinking, how cUUUUUUUte! but mommy and daddy are thinking, aww rats! those crazy words that mommy and daddy use when little people aren’t around, are now going to have to be put into a suitcase and packed into the attic to be brought out in 15 years. double rats. with cats.

verbose

Category: Baby Steps – Mommy Rimes – 11:26 am

overnight, our daughter has turned into a linguist. That’s how it always seems to work. One day, she’s just laying around, goo-ing and ahh-ing, and then she’s up running around and speaking coherent thoughts.
This weekend, we discovered the use of 2 words together for more meaning.

For example; “bye bye minnie” (she has a mickey and minnie doll that live in the car for car rides only).
“papa hiding” (grampa was not coming when she called him, so obviously, he was hiding).
“eat nack” (pretty self explanatory-nack=snack)

it’s simply amazing that last week, it was one word demands, but this week, the wheels are definitely turning and you can see her trying to put together her thoughts. And even better, she is trying her darndest to communicate those ideas. wow.

center of the universe

Category: Adventures in Parenting – Mommy Rimes – 2:02 pm

I realized the other day that this little person of mine has become the center of the universe for me.  Before her, I was the typical artist type person.  I would start working on a project before dinner, eat a sandwich when I was hungry, then go back to my art.  I could do this until fairly late in the evening.  Then, early the next morning (ok, not too early) I would get right back into it.  I could put out several projects a week if I was truly inspired.

But now, OOOOooooOOOoh no!  I’m lucky if I get one project done a MONTH.  And even then, most are left unfinished or are a sorry excuse for a true art project.  How could that be? you ask, Mommy Rimes, you are an art teacher, and you are always sewing up something interesting.  Well, let me tell you, I’ve been working on knitting a pair of socks since November.  Know how far I’ve gotten?  I’ve managed to get one sock ALMOST done, as of today.  I still have to knit the toe part.  Yup, 5 months to make ONE SOCK.  If I lived a hundred years ago, my family would have some pretty cold toes.

But, what about your quilts? you ask, that’s what you really dig.  I have two completely unfinished quilts sitting next to my sewing machine right now, and one that is all bagged up still from moving over the summer.  I finally had to give in and do a simple charm square quilt just to get the creativity out of my system.  Have I bound it yet? Nope, it’s still sitting there.

Ahh, but what I lack in art time, I make up for in toddler time.  She is the bright and shining sun in my day, and her daddy and I just rotate around her.  And one day, she will turn into a teenager and disappear from the heavens to a new solar system with new planets/friends, so I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.  When that day happens, you better watch out art world.  Because that’s the day I will get back into this art business.

echo?

Category: Adventures in Parenting – Mommy Rimes – 8:43 pm

echoOOoo!

Mommy and Daddy will definitely have to watch what they say from here on out.  We have a Baby Repeater on our hands.  A couple of weeks ago, it was body parts; “This is your elbow.” “Ehbow!”  But now, it’s just about anything that we end our sentences with, such as,

“how was your day?”

“day!”

“drink your milk.”

“mihk”

(daddy’s favorite) “you’ve got boogers!”

“bOOgahs!”

Oh yes, I can see the day when our little darling tells some adult at church or her babysitter what Mommy and Daddy were discussing the night before.  From how our day went at school, to the names of all the naughty children we talk about (in a positive, how would you handle this situation, way, of course), to to the exact way Mommy pronunciates “you dummy” any time someone can’t figure out how to hang up their phone and drive.

So, if you are ever within earshot of our little echo, please remember to watch what you say and only say those things you want repeated in polite company.

almost spring

Category: Adventures in Parenting, Uncategorized – Mommy Rimes – 5:39 pm

It’s been getting closer and closer to spring, and we’ve been watching the crocuses and tulips sprouting.  During a warm spell last week (it was 73!) Baby and Mommy took a long walk to look at all the little green things sticking up out of the ground.  There are cute little patches around our backyard of spring-y joys.  After so much snow and cold the last little bit of winter, we are truly enjoying the sunshine and green that has at last come back to Michigan.

Meanwhile, in other news, our little linguist has a few new words to add to her vocabulary.  Among them, are “oap,” “baaa,” and “ehhbow.”  Roughly translated, in order, these are soap, bath, and elbow.  It’s so amazing what she can communicate with so few words.  But she does pretty well with the sign language and body movements as well.

Bubbas!

Category: Playtime – Mommy Rimes – 9:43 pm

Mr. Bubble has come for a visit to our house.  And he may be in for a long stay.

Daddy and Baby R decided to try out the new bubbles about a week ago for bath time.  Daddy showed Baby how to smoosh the bubbles and make them go flyng everywhere.  That was totally fun!  But then, Daddy tried to get Baby to jump in the tub.  No way, uh uh, not gonna happen! The poor baby cried during her WHOLE bath!  This from the same kid who will come tearing through the house and start ripping off her clothes at the mere mention of bath time.

Fast forward a week.  Daddy tried again.  He had such great memories of Mr. Bubble.  It just had to be the same for his daughter.  They spent a few minutes smooshing bubbles.  Daddy even got Baby to smoosh her own bubbles in her hand.  He got her to smoosh bubbles in the tub. After the first 5 minutes of very worried brow furrowing, she finally got the hang of it, and now asks for “bubbas!” every bath night.

Hooray Mr. Bubble!

Happy Valentine’s Day

Category: Pictures – Daddy Rimes – 8:36 pm

Daddy Rimes finally got off his duff to put together a quick movie for Valentine’s Day. Yes, the editing is sophomoric, and my first attempt at making a slide show movie may be lacking, but it’s made with love…lots of love :)

Happy Valentine’s Day Mommy & Baby Rimes, I love you both!

Snow Day! Repeated!

Category: Uncategorized – Mommy Rimes – 6:53 pm

It is simply too cold to go to school today. It’s -4, and with the wind chill, it’s just plain Arctic.  So they canceled school for Monday.  What did Mommy and Daddy do?  They did lots of fun stuff!  Daddy played a lot of video games (mostly Zelda, Rayman’s Rabbid Rabbids, and a little Wii sports) and Mommy did more art.

I had a request asking what kind of crafts have I been up to.  Well, I finished a felted bead necklace last week, along with several quilt squares for my quilt guild swap.  Today, I did a quilt square for myself and cleaned out my “studio.”  I also started a pair of socks (ok, it’s just one right now) with a fabulous self-striping yarn.  I spent most of my day holding it up for Daddy to see the progress and exclaim, “isnt’ that sooo cool?!?!”

I’ll post some pictures later.

Meanwhile, our wonderful angel has been running laps around our house in nothin’ but her sweatshirt since she learned how to take off her pants.

Snow Day! take 3

Category: Uncategorized – Mommy Rimes – 6:46 pm

Can you believe it?  Yet another snow day!  I was almost dressed today when I got the phone call.  Can you believe we got that much snow in 4 days?  That’s a lot of snow!

Again, Baby and Mommy had some nice, leisurely morning time.  This time though, she started asking about her friends, so we bundled up and off we went.  She ran right off to her friends and ignored Mommy completely, so Mommy went off to do some errands without her trusty sidekick.

I got to have another wonderful day of laundry and crafting.  Although, to be completely honest, I was kinda bummed about not going to school today.  I was all set to go in and paint the paper mache masks that my 7th graders had done.  Oh well.  They’ll have to wait til next week.

Tomorrow, there is absolutely no way we are going to have another snow day.  Absolutely no way.  Besides, Daddy would be totally jealous if I had 4 days off in a row!
